Becoming an Intern!
When most people think of an internship coffee making, mail outs and whole heap of photocopying comes to mind. However whilst working for Roxie at Plan.It Roxie Event Management, a day in the life of an intern bares no such resemblance.
We are fortunate enough to work at a place where not only do we feel appreciated and that our opinion is valued but where we are directly learning the ins and outs of the industry first hand from a person who knows and has experienced it all.
How lucky are we?! We know…So how did we get such a great internships?
Firstly initiative, these positions are rarely advertised and therefore must be sought after. In some cases employers may not even be aware that having interns is an option for their business!
Trying to get your foot in the door might seem like an impossible task, especially when you’re not sure where to begin, but all it takes is making that first initial contact. Once you have made that phone call or sent that email to an employer or organisation of interest, you’re half way there!
Sending out a resume is a great place to start but if you are passionate about a particular job or industry going that bit further, showing how interested you really are and putting in that extra effort is impressive to a prospective employer.
Perhaps this means calling instead of emailing, or being creative with the way you present our resume (however there are situations where hot pink paper and the use of glitter pens are not advised, unless your applying for a really cool company like Plan.It Roxie!)
Another major thing is to be prepared!!! It might sound obvious but if you do some research into the business or company you’re interested in interested! It will help you in an interview and show that you are truly interested in the business.
Finding out the name of the person of whom you’re sending your resume to is also extremely important. Never send out applications on mass, individualise them for each company otherwise the employer wont feel as though your genuinely interested in working there.
Also after sending each resume, follow it up with a phone call or email a few days later to confirm it has been received. All these little things add up and show the employer how much you really want to work with them. It doesn’t take much but it can mean the difference between kick starting your dream career and checking out groceries, day dreaming about it.
Initiation, passion and effort go a long way in the application process and in return eventually you will obtain exactly what your looking for, if not more! We have only been interning with Roxie for a few weeks and already have learnt a number of crucial skills that and developed our knowledge in events management that could never have been obtained from a textbook. We now have a foot in the door into an industry we are passionate about and will give us a great platform to building a career… couldn’t be happier!
